A stunning Godolphin juvenile has been introduced at 33-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas following a dazzling debut at Kempton on Wednesday evening.
Talk Of New York became the talk of the town when showing an impressive turn of foot to storm home by five and a half lengths in the mile maiden stakes. The son of Wootton Bassett took a keen hold when making the early running but quickened clear inside the final furlong to win in good style.
Buick told Racing TV: “He was perfect in the race. He’s babyish, as you’d expect being his first time out, and a little full of himself, but he couldn’t have done anything wrong.
“Once he got relaxed and into a nice rhythm, he picked up really good. You’d have to be pretty impressed with what he did there.”
Trained by Charlie Appleby, the smart colt is a half-brother to Listed-placed five-year-old Star Guest, and connections had been impressed with his homework before his debut.
Buick added: “I’m delighted with him, and all in all, he looks a good horse for next year. He’d been doing all the right things at home as well. Everyone had a high opinion of him, and to see a performance like that would have pleased everyone.”
Paddy Power have installed Talk Of New York at 33-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas. Albert Einstein heads the market at 9-1.
Paddy Power spokesperson Paul Binfield said: “The winner is called Talk Of New York, but perhaps that should really be Talk Of Newmarket as he was backed as if defeat was out of the question on this debut and went off odds on.
“Despite being keen enough, William knew what he had under him and the way he went clear inside the last furlong was very impressive.
“Of course, it’s one thing winning a Kempton maiden and another winning the first British Classic, but beating a John Gosden horse that had already had a run and showed promise by over five lengths is a dream start and certainly enough to warrant our traders putting him in the Guineas market.”
