Warrington Wolves

Former Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara has taken up a role on Sam Burgess’ Warrington Wolves coaching team.

McNamara has been out of work since leaving the Dragons in May, leaving the French outfit after seven and a half seasons in charge. And, he has now agreed to join Warrington to work under Burgess following the departure of Martin Gleeson, who has left the club to join rugby union side Bath.

The 54-year-old adds plenty of experience to the Warrington coaching team, having spent time in charge of Bradford Bulls and England before his spell with Catalans. And, the East Yorkshireman has worked in the NRL in an assistant capacity with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors.

Warrington haven’t specified what role he will take up with Warrington, but he will begin work under Burgess when preparations begin for the 2026 Super League season and his appointment can be regarded as something of a coup.

Steve McNamara joins Warrington Wolves

“I’m pleased to be joining Warrington and working with Sam and the rest of the staff,” McNamara told the Warrington Wolves website.

“The club has huge potential, especially with the number of talented young players coming through.

“My aim is to bring my experience to help the group keep improving and to build consistency in how we train, prepare and perform.

“I can feel there is a really strong sense of ambition here and I look forward to playing my part in helping the team realise its potential.”

Director of rugby Gary Chambers added: “We’re pleased to welcome Steve to the club as preparations continue to build for the new season.

“His experience and expertise will be invaluable to our rugby programme going forward.”
