State pensioners getting free £200 sum on top of Winter Fuel Payment
State pensioners in an area could receive a £200 cash boost to help with energy costs this winter. In addition to the reinstated £300 Winter Fuel Payment, state pensioners could benefit from another payout from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
In Islington, state pensioners are being handed £200 by the local authority. This initiative by the council in the capital is part of the Household Support Fund, which has seen the Labour Party government provide financial assistance to struggling pensioners.
The council states: “If you live in Islington and get pension credit, you can apply for help with household costs through the Household Support Fund.
“We know that some people on pension credit may find it hard to pay for things like food and energy bills. This fund is here to help.”
Eligibility criteria for the scheme include being 66 years or older (State Pension age), being on a low income, receiving pension credit, guarantee credit or savings credit, and living in Islington as your main and permanent address, reports Birmingham Live.
The council adds: “We will use Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data and other systems to check that you receive or have claimed pension credit.”
Successful applicants will receive a one-off payment of £200. Previously, Islington Council used their administrative data in LIFT to identify 689 eligible households who were missing out on the DWP benefit at a household level.
By running a targeted campaign, they helped 274 households to successfully claim pension credit – totalling £939,100 per year.
Islington was also able to distribute £230,970 in backdated DWP benefits to these households. The total amount of benefits awarded was £1,231,633, or an average of £4,495 per household.
25 of these households were also in debt to Islington Council, primarily due to rent arrears or Council Tax debt. As these households became more financially stable, £13,649 of this debt has now been repaid.
The council has also saved £209,606 because the extra income awarded to residents now enables those with caring responsibilities to care for longer before applying for a care package.
