The 2025 Formula 1 season begins it’s Americas leg with the United States Grand Prix this weekend.
At the Singapore GP earlier this month, Mercedes‘ George Russell fought off a strong challenge from Red Bull‘s Max Verstappen and McLaren‘s Lando Norris to claim his second win of the campaign.
Norris comes into this year’s United States GP as the defending champion. Currently second in the driver standings, he trails McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by 25 points.
McLaren, with 12 wins in 18 races so far this season, is at 650 points in team standings and has opened up a 325-point lead over second-placed Ferrari.

What is an F1 sprint race?
Gone is the standard three-practice, qualifying, and race setup. Instead, teams dive straight into action with just one practice session early Friday, giving engineers barely enough time to blink, let alone fine-tune setups. Right after that, it’s lights out for a shortened version of qualifying — a rapid-fire, three-round, 44-minute knockout that’s a slimmed-down cousin of the usual hour-long session.
That quickfire quali locks in the starting grid for Saturday’s Sprint — a roughly 100-kilometer dash that’s all gas and no brakes. No mandatory pit stops, no tire compound changes, just flat-out racing from start to finish. With championship points on the line for the top eight finishers (eight for the winner, seven for second, and so on), the Sprint packs serious punch for such a short burst.
But that’s just the warm-up. Later Saturday, teams regroup for a full-length qualifying session to decide the starting order for Sunday’s main event — the Grand Prix itself.
