I gave a subject every day for members to post a photo of.

I hoped during 2020 that it would help, by members looking around them a bit more, either in their confines of home, or, if able, on short breaks outside or by looking back at photos of happier times with the hope they would return.

I decided a few weeks ago to have a ‘star of the day’ picking out what I felt was the best photo.

My idea was that members might try and improve their photography skills or pick the best photo they had of a particular subject.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t a popular idea; a few members messaged me saying they were leaving the group because the competition element, as they saw it, was no longer ‘fun.’

I found this rather interesting as there was no prize involved.

Those who were chosen were thrilled, with some saying, “Thank you, I’ve never won anything before.”

My mantra when taking part in a quiz is ‘it’s not the winning …’.

I have a friend who says it is.

The difference between us is that she usually does and I usually don’t!

I’m an avid fan of GBBO, Sewing Bee, and Pottery Throwdown.

The contestants often say that taking part has improved their skills, their confidence, they have learnt new things, and they support each other.

I’ve never seen a sore loser.

You obviously can compete against yourself.

Athletes are always striving to beat their personal best.

Why can’t you try to make your best-ever cake, knit your best-ever jumper, write your best-ever story, and take your best-ever photo?

Many WIs have competitions, often tied to the subject of the meeting.

A bit of fun, encouraging you to do something different, stimulating your brain cells.

I stopped the star of the day; those who left came back.

Interestingly, I’ve noticed the photos have improved, so maybe my idea wasn’t so bad after all.
