For the first time in IPL’s history, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to qualify for the second round of two back-to-back IPL seasons after they crashed out of the league stage of IPL 2025. Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK missed out on making it to the IPL 2024 playoffs by a whisker. Ruturaj was ruled out of IPL 2025 after 5 matches due to an injury. MS Dhoni returned as the captain in his absence.

Sanju Samson in
Multiple reports have confirmed that Sanju Samson wrote to Rajasthan Royals (RR) about moving on from the franchise. Whether he will get traded to any other franchise or get released isn’t known. Samson could also possibly stay at RR now that the franchise has made few changes in the backroom staff.
Few months back, Cricbuzz reported that CSK were open the welcoming Samson for IPL 2026. This could only happen if RR get players they want in return. Before IPL 2021, RR traded Robin Uthappa to CSK. He ended up playing an important role in CSK’s title win. RR retained Samson for Rs 18 crore before the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
MS Dhoni is expected to play IPL 2026 but CSK need his replacement in the long run. Samson will be a perfect replacement for Dhoni behind the wickets. Not to forget, he can also lead CSK if needed.
4 Indians to be released
CSK will have to release R Ashwin as he has now retired from Indian cricket. He will now be seen in action for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League. The Yellow Army could release Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda and Vijay Shankar. All are experienced players but couldn’t do much in the previous season. CSK could release them and revamp their middle-order.
Devon Conway to be released?
Devon Conway played a key role in CSK’s title win in IPL 2023. But he hasn’t been able to replicate his performance. CSK re-signed him for Rs 6.25 crore before IPL 2025. They could re-sign him again for a lower amount than this if he is released.
