Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Coventry City midfielder George Shepherd.
The 16-year-old was named on the first team bench for Saturday’s Championship clash against Blackburn Rovers. It comes after the teenager impressed while making his first appearance for the club’s U21s earlier this season.
Shepherd’s positive performances have seen former Chelsea midfielder, now Sky Blues manager, Frank Lampard include him in their promotion-chasing squad. The Daily Mail claim that United are one of several high-profile clubs ‘tracking’ the young star, who has one goal and an assist to his name for the club’s U21 side.
Asked about the teenager in his post-match press conference following Coventry’s 2-0 win over Blackburn on Saturday, Lampard told CoventryLive: “He’s been training with us, on and off, a lot, and he’s training great.
“He’s a really talented young boy, a local lad and a Coventry fan. He loves the club and he’s still 16.
“He’s been playing on the right wing a little bit for us in the 21s at the minute but he can play as a ten. There’s a bit of an eight/ten there so he’s a very versatile attacking player and he’s a kid. And he deserves his chance on the bench because of how he’s trained.”
Lampard added: “He needs to continue but it was a nice little story to get him on there. And it’s not just a gift because the way he’s training and with our squad size, he’s training to deserve to be on the bench at a minute, so it’s a good story.”
Shepherd will be hoping to make his first team debut in Coventry’s next match – a trip to Portsmouth on Tuesday evening. Lampard’s team currently sit top of the Championship table after 10 matches.
