The number of jobs on offer continues to rise, alongside an increase in the number of New Zealanders applying for work in Australia.
The latest SEEK NZ employment report indicates the volume of ads rose 1 percent in September, which was the fourth consecutive monthly increase, or 6 percent up on the year earlier.
“The momentum was broad-based, with almost every industry seeing increasing demand,” SEEK country manager Rob Clark said.
“The construction and professional services sectors in particular are where growth has been accelerating recently.”
The overall number of applications for work rose 1 percent in August, but was up 19 percent in Manawatu, followed by Auckland (17 percent) and Waikato (16 percent).
The number of people applying for work in Australia was also on the rise.
SEEK’s data indicated that while domestic applications per job ad in NZ remained extremely elevated at more than 266 percent up in August 2025 compared with August 2019, applications from New Zealanders to Australian roles were also higher now than they were pre-Covid.
“We’re very fortunate that we have that option and when the unemployment rate here is higher than Australia then obviously you see a bit more movement that way and when it’s not the case you know you see less movement,” Clark said.
“Looking at annual trends, the South Island is outperforming the North, with all regions recording double-digit rises in ad volumes.”
He said Canterbury and Otago were leading the growth with a 17 percent increase on the year earlier.
