What is Benjamin Nygren best position in this Celtic team? To me it’s the right hand side of the front three…

Benjamin Nygren was heralded as a terrific signing, and rightly so, as creative players who provides their fair share of goals are few and far between these days, with Benji coming into that category, and even better we got him at a knockdown price.
Benji, however has had, it’s fair to say, something of a difficult first few months at the club, despite his decent return of four goals and four assists. Described as a versatile attacker, the Swedish international has mainly been played in the attacking midfield position, but for me and a lot of other supporters he’s too similar in style to Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor making our midfield look somewhat unbalanced.

After watching Benji up closely on a regular basis, I’m of the opinion that his talent would be better of served on the right hand side of the attack, the position he’s held for most of his career, and one he’s provided great numbers from. For previous club Nordsjaelland and even at International level for Sweden he produced his best form as an attacking forward mainly on the right hand side.
Some will say he’s rather slow, or not productive enough, but his career stats say otherwise. What’s the alternative? Yang isn’t providing anything really, James Forrest is past his prime and is probably better deployed as a substitute, Michel-Ange Balikwisha is probably going more effective on the left when he gets going and that is also Daizen Maeda best position.

So for me it’s time for Nygren to get a regular run in a position he’s more than comfortable in, and let either Arne Engels, Paulo Bernardo, or Luke McCowan take the other midfield berth, assuming Brendan Rodgers sticks with the 4-3-3 system.
Forming a successful and efficient side means playing players in their most productive positions. It’s time to let Benji play in his favoured position and for Celtic to reap the rewards.
