She and her brother, Charlie Cooper, wrote the mockumentary based on their own experiences of growing up in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

The show ran for three series with the real-life siblings playing cousins Kerry and Lee “Kurtan” Mucklowe, living in a fictional and unnamed Cotswolds town.

This Country, which was filmed in the village of Northleach just over the Oxfordshire border, last aired on BBC Three in 2020.

Despite its popularity, series creator and star Ms May Cooper has ruled out making a return to the show as Kerry.

Speaking to Radio Times, she said she is working on a new project with her brother, but gave two reasons why This Country cannot return.

“It’s early days, but we’re working on something unscripted,” revealed the 39-year-old.

“We can’t do This Country, though, because I’ve lost so much weight and I’ve had my lips done.

“We’d have to say that Kerry’s had a tapeworm and been stung by a bee.”

Ms May Cooper added that after her dramatic weight loss journey over the last two years, she has been sent messages telling he she is “no longer funny”.

Responding to this on the BBC podcast How To Be In The Spotlight: “I’m so for body positivity, but when I was at my biggest, I was at my most miserable and I had a massive food addiction.’

“I wasn’t healthy. I couldn’t breathe when I was walking up the stairs. I was so unhappy.

“And I’ve had some messages like, “Well, now you’ve lost the weight, you’re not funny any more.”
