A gritty second half display backed up a stunning first half showing to see Hull City make it three wins on the spin with an impressive 2-1 win over Leicester City.
City were a goal in front after just six minutes through a crunching finish from Joe Gelhardt’s cross off the right flank, to give the hosts a flying start.
Their terrific first-half showing was rewarded when the lead was doubled just after the half-hour when Ryan Giles’ cross through the box found Gelhardt at the back post unmarked to tuck into the net.
Leicester’s increasing pressure in the second period eventually got them back into the game when Aaron Ramsey stepped off the bench to clip a fine effort over Ivor Pandur, but the Tigers held on to claim another eye-catching success.
Here’s how Tigers reporter Barry Cooper rated the players at the MKM Stadium on Tuesday evening…
Ivor Pandur: Made an important save at 2-0 when he beat away Abdul Fatawu’s curling effort. Caught out by the brilliance of Aaron Ramsey’s lofted effort. 7/10
Ryan Giles: A tough first half up against Leicester’s best player in Fatawu, but stuck at it well. Carved out the second goal with his sixth assist of the season. A really good display, worryingly cut short by injury. 8/10
Charlie Hughes: A solid first half alongside Ajayi in the heart of the back four. Made an absolute belter of a block late on with Leicester banging on the door. Immense. 9/10
Semi Ajayi: A first start since the opening day of the season at Coventry City for the Nigerian international and made a crucial block early on to deny an equaliser. Immense. 9/10
Cody Drameh: Replaced Lewie Coyle in the starting line-up and was always keen to get him up and down the flank. Fell asleep once and Ajayi bailed him out. 8/10
Amir Hadziahmetovic: Neat ball around the corner sent Gelhardt away for Millar’s opener, seemed to enjoy himself with a bit more time and space. Lost his way in the second but was very good in the first. 8/10
Regan Slater: Almost scored inside the opening couple of minutes but was denied by the goalkeeper. A proper first half full of graft and that continued into the second. 8/10
Liam Millar: After 363 long, long days, the Canadian ace started a competitive game for the Tigers and what a start it was. Carved out two chances before he powered in the opener six minutes in. Was a constant threat. Tired late on but what a display. 9/10
Matt Crooks: Returned to the starting XI and just glided through the game. In the right place at the right time, and played with a swagger. Slipped at the right time for the opening goal, although I’ll credit him with the intended dummy. 8/10
Joe Gelhardt: Terrific cross for Liam Millar to open the scoring. Turned in the second, which capped a fine half. His tracking back in added time to win his side a free-kick was crucial. Booked in the second period for what the referee felt was a dive inside the box. Superb display, even if he did run out of gas late on from that effort. 8.5/10
Kyle Joseph: Led the line in the absence of Oli McBurnie and worked his socks off, running hard. Will be frustrated at the two big chances he had and didn’t take. Ran himself into the ground for the cause. 8/10
Subs:
Akin Famewo (for Giles 58): Came on at left-back in place of Giles. Up against the impressive Fatawu, had some nervy moments and got beaten a couple of times. 6.5/10
Enis Destan (for Joseph 73): Occupied space, but found it tough to get on the ball with City pinned back for much of the final stages. Did win the ball in added time on more than one useful occasion. 6.5/10
Darko Gyabi (for Amir 73): Burst forward in the final few moments and won his side a valuable free-kick to eat up some time. 6/10
Joel Ndala (for Slater 84): Got caught in possession late on. He probably should have come on sooner. 6/10
John Egan (for Gelhardt 84): Just having him on the for the final few minutes was important. 6/10
