The warning was published by the Suffolk and North East Essex Safeguarding Nursing Team, with Suffolk County Council sharing it with schools on Tuesday.
In the document, the nursing team said: “Although we have previously been made aware of national concerns around the ‘Tap out’ TikTok challenge, professionals have now raised that it is known that children in Suffolk are taking part in this challenge.
“There has been lots of national media coverage around this TikTok challenge, but we wanted to highlight that this is happening in Suffolk.”
The challenge involves groups of teens, with one child being put in a chokehold, with pressure being applied until they ‘tap out’.
There can be serious risks to those taking part in the challenge, such as brain damage or death from asphyxiation.
They have also released on the signs and injuries to look out for, which include:
Head injuries (as can fall when losing consciousness)
Possible loss of memory – feeling confused or disoriented after being alone
Marks or bruises on the neck
Blood shot eyes (conjunctival haemorrhage).
Scratches or small red spots (petechiae) to neck/eyelids/cheeks and behind ears.
Raspy or hoarse voice
Severe headache
There are similar challenges which have been popular online, which are known as the Fainting Game, Hangman, Elevator and Blackout.
