Saracens tighthead Marco Riccioni couldn’t resist having the last laugh with Northampton supporters after being sent to the sin bin — but Saints fans were quick to fire back.

After receiving a yellow card, the Italian international cheekily pointed to the three stars on his Saracens shirt, representing the club’s three Champions Cup victories.

However, Northampton fans — who had plenty to celebrate after a 43–31 victory inspired by Tommy Freeman’s four-try masterclass — were quick to remind him of the controversies behind those stars.

“All won with the help of financial cheating before he was even at the club!” wrote one fan.

“Were there not some slight issues with financial regulations at the time those three were sewn on?” another joked.

“Add one more and he’s counted Tommy’s tries,” added another.

Other supporters were less subtle:

“An asterisk for every salary cap breach,” quipped one, while another wrote, “More stars and stains than points they went home with today.”

While Riccioni may have been aiming for a bit of light-hearted banter, it’s fair to say Saints fans had the final word — both on social media and on the scoreboard.
