Former Newcastle United transfer target Ruben Neves is planning a Premier League return next summer, prompting speculation of renewed interest from the Magpies.

Reports have suggested the former Wolves midfielder is ready to call time on his spell in the Saudi Pro League, with ambitions for success in England still said to be high on his agenda.

United were one of several clubs linked with Neves in 2023, but the Portugal star opted for a move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in a £47m deal.

His current contract expires next summer, with SportsBoom reporting that he could return to the Premier League once that deal ends.

Neves will turn 29 next summer, so wouldn’t necessarily fit Newcastle’s transfer blueprint despite previous interest.

However, as a free agent, he would certainly be in dermand, and would offer experience to Eddie Howe’s midfield.

United currently have strong options in the centre of the park, with Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Lewis Miley, Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock competing for places.

A January move could be on the cards should Al-Hilal decide to cash in before Neves’ contract expires. Newcastle could consider moving Willock on, with the former Arsenal midfielder struggling for gametime this season, but may also prefer a younger addition to the squad.

Neves won the Saudi Pro League in his first season with Al-Hilal as well as the King’s Cup, with the club having also twice won the Saudi Super Cup.

Manchester United have been linked with a £17m January move for Neves, as Ruben Amorim looks to increase his midfield options. The Red Devils are also keen on Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and could look to sell Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.

There is also strong interest from Spain and Italy, but Neves is reported to favour a return to the Premier League, where he impressed for six seasons with Wolves.

Still a regular for Portugal, he scored in their 1-0 win over Ireland earlier this month in a World Cup qualifier and is likely to be a key part of Roberto Martinez’s squad in next summer’s World Cup.
