Ireland international James Bentley has shared a parting statement after his shock release from Leeds Rhinos earlier this month.

It’s been almost a fortnight since that surprise news came out of Headingley that the club were releasing Bentley. What was particularly surprising was the fact that the second-rower was tied down until the end of the 2027 season.

In fact, he’d only signed a contract extension in April but six months down the line and he’s left Leeds Rhinos.

A brief statement from the club confirmed: “Leeds Rhinos have today released back row James Bentley from the remainder of his contract with immediate effect.

“Bentley joined the Rhinos in 2022 from St Helens and the 27-year-old had agreed an extension to his contract in April. However, due to a personal matter, both parties have agreed a release from the remainder of his contract to allow Bentley to look at other options for 2026 and beyond in his best interests.

“Leeds Rhinos as a club will continue to offer James support.”

Now, Bentley has taken to social media to send his own parting message to the Leeds Rhinos fans.

Taking to his Instagram account, the 28-year-old confirmed that it was: “The end of a chapter”.

His message continued: “It’s been an honour and a childhood dream to play for my hometown club, @leedsrhinos over the last 4 years. Things haven’t always gone the way that little lad imagined, but I’ve made memories, gained stories I’ll never forget, and learnt valuable lessons along the way.

“A huge thank you to everyone at the club — from top to bottom — and last but not least, to the fans for all your support.”

Bentley is now among the most high-profile free agents available to sign with over 100 Super League appearances to his name, including 26 in the 2025 campaign.

He had been selected to represent Ireland in their end-of-season international against Wales on Saturday, however, he didn’t feature with Wales winning that game 24-0.
