Chelsea captain Reece James was unable to make a real impact on their defeat to Sunderland, however is now top for one stat in the Premier League in a single game.

The England international was always going to start the game due to Malo Gusto serving his suspension for a red card picked up against Nottingham Forest.

However, a nightmare afternoon for the Blues played out before the Stamford Bridge crowd that saw them defeated 2-1 by the Black Cats.

Maresca has maintained his stance of protecting James from his own injury problems. He started on the bench for the important Champions League game against Ajax just three days before this outing.

Chelsea chiefs have loved Maresca’s approach with James, and this looks set to be the method used going forwards with some of the other injury-prone players.
