The Bulls second row enjoyed a stellar first season at Bulls in 2025, playing a key role as the team reached two semi-finals.

A regular starter, Gee’s consistent performances saw him named as one of four nominees for the T&A Player of the Year award, which he ultimately missed out on to Luke Hooley.

There was some uncertainty as to whether Gee would play for Bulls in Super League next season or not, given contracts are having to be re-negotiated and re-considered after the club’s promotion.

There was also some speculation that Widnes were interested in snapping him up to play in the Championship next season, but Gee has emphatically shut down those rumours by deciding to retire from the game.

Announce the news on his official Instagram account, the 30-year-old wrote: “Well the time has come to hang the boots up.

“It’s been a pleasure to live my dream for 12 years and to represent the clubs I have but the time has come that I can start spending more time at home with my family.

“I’ve played in places all over and had so many unreal experiences over the years.

“I want to thank all the players and staff I’ve worked with over the years, I have made mates for life.

“I also want to thank all my family and friends for the support over the years.

“I want to thank my beautiful wife for her support, it couldn’t have been easy doing long distance in London or when we moved to Hull and I couldn’t have done it without her.

“Rugby league, it’s been a pleasure, on to the next chapter.”

For their part, Bulls said: “We would like to congratulate Matty on his superb career and achievements.

“We also thank him for his efforts while wearing a Bradford shirt and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours.”

Gee made his professional debut playing for North Wales Crusaders, while he had spells with Hunslet, Salford, Workington, Hull Kingston Rovers and Leigh.

But he is best known for his time at London Broncos and Halifax.

While in the capital, he made 71 appearances and memorably helped them win promotion to Super League in 2018 after a shock 4-2 victory over Toronto in the Million Pound Game.

A few years later, Gee had a distinguished spell with Fax, where he featured 68 times over a three-year period.

The highlight came when he played a crucial role in their 1895 Cup final triumph over Batley at Wembley in 2023, the Panthers winning a thriller 12-10.

Gee then moved to Bradford ahead of last season, where he scored seven tries in 28 appearances.
