A new ultra-cheap doorbell video device is available in Aldi(Image: Streetview)
Aldi has introduced its own video doorbell, providing competition for brands such as Ring, Blink and Nest, with the added advantage of being subscription-free. Priced at just £16.99, it doesn’t come with the monthly subscription fees associated with other brands.
Ring’s subscription services range from £4.99 to £15.99 per month, Blink’s vary between £2.50 and £8 per month, while Nest charges either £6 or £12 per month.
The cheapest video doorbell offered by Ring is priced at £49.99 on its website, Blink’s is available for £37.99 on Amazon, and Nest’s is listed for £179.99 on the Google store.
Aldi’s budget-friendly alternative is battery-powered and compatible with micro SD cards, which can be replaced once full, allowing you to retain as much footage as desired.
The doorbell can connect from your phone and give you access to video images
The device also features two-way communication, water resistance, a motion detector and night vision capabilities. However, it does offer a lower resolution than its competitors, at 480p.
Tech Radar, a technology review site, described it as a “decent buy” and “worth trying”. They noted: “Unlike leading video doorbell brands that require you to pay a monthly subscription for advanced features and additional storage, Aldi’s version does not, thanks to its support for micro SD cards (up to 32GB).”

Ring’s product only retains video history for 180 days, whereas with the Aldi version, as it’s all saved to SD cards, you can keep it indefinitely. “Aside from its subscription-free nature, Aldi’s video doorbell isn’t quite up to par when it comes to the features offered by its competitors, but this shouldn’t be too big an issue if you’re looking for a basic model without AI smarts to get you started.
“It’s far from a groundbreaking piece of smart home tech, but for £16.99 I’d say it’s worth trying.” You can read more about the doorbell’s features on its product listing here.
