Following Brendan Rodgers‘ acrimonious exit, O’Neill has been placed as temporary boss along with Shaun Maloney. Ange Postecoglou has been installed as early bookies’ favourite for a potential return, while Robbie Keane, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, Craig Bellamy and Damien Duff are among the others thought to be in the running.

Rangers legend McCoist has given his take on some possible candidates – including Bellamy and Duff but also putting forward another ex-Celtic player in Gary Caldwell.

He also reckons there is a strong chance O’Neill remains in place for the rest of the campaign before a permanent appointment next summer.

When Caldwell was suggested to him on talkSPORT, McCoist said: “I don’t see why not” and went on to discuss how good a job he has done at Exeter City.

Bellamy was the next name to be put forward and McCoist admitted: “Do you know something? If we were having this conversation a couple of years ago I would have thought ‘No way.’

“But see listening to him? The way he handles it, the way he talks about the game and his love for the game and desire to do well. I don’t think that would be daft at all.

“I’ll throw another one? What about Damien Duff? I know he’s been pretty successful recently.

“From where I’m sitting I think it would make sense for Martin to stay there until the end of the season and assess the situation.”
