JERSEY Marine Resources is calling on Islanders to help track sharks and rays in local waters as part of a PhD research project.
The long-term tagging study, which is being undertaken in partnership with JICAS and the University of Exeter, aims to better understand the species’ behaviour.
“This data is vital to supporting sustainable fisheries management and marine conservation,” Marine Resources said.
During recent fieldwork along the north coast, 20 tags were attached to tope sharks over two days.
Each tag collects data for four weeks before detaching and floating to the surface.
“If you come across one of our tags, please return it – they are incredibly valuable for our research,” they added. A £50 reward is offered.
