Magnus Cort Nielsen had a strong start into the 2025 season, dominating the O Gran Camino with four stage victories. Later, he also finished 6th at Strade Bianche and Milano-Sanremo to close spring with a 2nd spot at Eschborn-Frankfurt. But instead of becoming a springboard into a strong second half of the season, the German WorldTour race marked a breaking point in Cort’s year.

Since then, Cort has been only a shadow of his best version and ultimately called it a season already in August during the home Tour of Denmark. Before the Danish race, Cort also completed the Critérium du Dauphiné and Tour de France, but was nowhere near competing for his third Tour stage victory.

Behind his struggles appeared to have been a mysterious illness, however doctors did not detect any abnormalities, leaving Cort with many more questions than answers. But in the latest development, it seems as though some rest helped Cort get back on the right track and should arrive into the first WorldTour season of Uno-X Mobility in full strengths.

“The way he is progressing at the moment, I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be ready again by the start of next year,” Uno-X Mobility’s chief physician Rory Nolan tells Feltet.

The fatigue and illness in Cort’s body has been a mystery. He himself says in ‘Cort Fortalt’ that he believes it is due to the way he pushed himself in the Tour, which may be a reason behind it.

“We still haven’t been able to find the direct cause of it, but it makes sense that it’s an extra fatigue I have in my body. I pushed my body further than ever before in the Tour.”

Nolan explains that above all, a great fatigue overwhelmed Cort in the second part of 2025 as he tried to push his body way over the limit, ignoring warning signs. Fortunately for Cort, there shouldn’t be a major obstacle in Cort’s recovery other than a temporary training outage.

“Like everyone else, you only have one battery. It could be one thing or many little things that affect that battery. Whether it’s a change in his training, an infection or the race program or the accumulation of being a professional for many years. Then the battery gets worn out, and then it’s about getting it back up.”
