Vertigo Games has confirmed its PSVR2 spin-off from the Thief franchise will release on 4th December 2025, alongside other headsets like the Meta Quests and Steam VR. Maze Theory, the developer of Thief: Legacy of Shadow, has collaborated with the series’ original creators from Eidos Montreal to make the game, and you can see some new gameplay in the trailer above.
Pre-orders for the title will go live on the PS Store today, and anyone who coughs up the cash now gets a 10% discount on the launch price.
Legacy of Shadow is leaning into the trappings of the immersive sim genre despite being a VR experience, offering open-ended levels and non-linear progression. “The sense of presence VR provides makes the experience all the more intense and engaging,” explained creative director Steven Gallagher on the PlayStation Blog.
“The immediacy of being able to naturally use your head to watch your back as your hands pick locks with the help of haptic feedback, is as real as it gets to being in the City,” he continued. There’ll also be “next-gen” sound integration and better visuals in the darkness thanks to the PSVR2’s OLED lenses.
As it turns out, Eidos Montreal actually experimented with a Thief VR game for the original PSVR device towards the end of development on the 2014 PS4 entry. “Unfortunately, we weren’t particularly experienced in making VR back then, so the overall product ended up being a bit hard to play,” said Gallagher, so he’s pleased to see Thief finally gets its chance in VR.
