Kerry Katona has taken a swipe at her Atomic Kitten successor Jenny Frost, more than twenty years after leaving the girl band.

The singer, 45, rose to prominence as a founding member of the group in 1998 and departed in 2001, following news she was expecting her first child with Westlife star Brian McFadden.

She was quickly succeeded by ex-Precious vocalist Jenny, with the band shooting to stardom following the line-up change.

Kerry, alongside Jenny and former bandmate Natasha Hamilton, appears in BBC Two’s latest documentary Girlbands Forever.

Over three episodes, the programme explores the behind-the-scenes challenges encountered by iconic girl bands from the nineties through to the 2010s, reports OK!.

In the second instalment, Atomic Kitten’s creator Andrew McCluskey discloses they were close to being axed from their record company after Kerry’s exit.

However, once their cherished track ‘Whole Again’ reached number one, the outfit gained fresh momentum.

The track’s remarkable triumph, and the fame the came with it, was enjoyed by new arrival Jenny, together with original vocalists Natasha and Liz McClarnon.

Kerry believes her successor’s achievements weren’t entirely earned.

She explained in the programme: “I don’t know Jenny that well, I’ve nothing bad to say about Jenny because I don’t know her. But I wish her the best of luck.”

Kerry added a sharp jab, stating: “I mean, she was handed it [the fame]. She was. You’re welcome.”

Bandmate Natasha also recognises that Jenny was incredibly fortunate when she joined the group just as their popularity seemed to be fading.

“Jenny took a massive risk but that risk paid off immensely. Because she came into a band who had an instant number one and we flew from that moment on,” the 43-year-old said.

However, Jenny has no regrets. “I never felt bad for Kerry because she’d made a decision,” she admitted.

“She had chosen she wanted to be with Brian and have a baby. So that was her path. I went for it and it worked out. Maybe she regrets leaving the band, whether she admits it or not I don’t know.”

Alongside Atomic Kitten, the new documentary series includes extensive interviews with members from Little Mix, Mis-Teeq, Sugababes and All Saints.

All three episodes of Girlbands Forever are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
