Ryan Reynolds is set to play an ‘original villainous character’ in the live-action film adaptation of Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight’s beloved children’s book series “Eloise” at Netflix.
The books follow a mischievous young girl who lives on the ‘tippy-top floor’ of New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel. Newcomer Mae Schenk will take on the role of Eloise, who spars with Reynolds’ character.
Rather than a direct adaptation, this is said to be a “wholly original adventure” based on the book series. Specifics of the plot are under wraps.
“Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is directing and writing the feature with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton co-writing the screenplay.
Hannah Minghella, Netflix’s head of feature animation and family film, says:
“Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza. It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm—Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds—in this bold, hilarious, and heartfelt new family film.”
Eloise has been the subject of TV movies and an animated TV series. Various attempts were made in the mid-late 2000s to adapt to film without success.
