Former Hull FC outside back Kieran Buchanan has secured a Super League deal for the 2026 season and beyond, with York Knights agreeing a new two-year contract with the Hull-born player.
Buchanan left the Black and Whites back in 2020 after debuting the season before. He played 13 times for the club, scoring three tries.
After leaving Hull, the centre, who can also double up as a back rower, moved to Batley Bulldogs, where he played for four seasons, making over 100 consecutive appearances. He joined York ahead of 2025 and was ever present in a campaign that saw the Knights win both the Championship League Leaders Shield and the 1895 Cup.
Buchanan has also featured for Scotland at international level and faced Australia in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. He will now line up again in the top flight of the domestic game, with York one of three promoted clubs to Super League alongside Bradford Bulls and Toulouse Olympique.
Speaking on his new deal, Buchanan said: “I’m buzzing to be re-signing with the York Knights. My first year here has honestly been perfect. I’ve loved every minute with the lads, the staff, and the fans. I couldn’t have asked for a better club to be part of. I’m excited for what’s ahead and ready to give it everything again next season.”
Meanwhile, head coach Mark Applegarth has called Buchanan an ‘unsung’ member of his side, which has signed the likes of former Hull player Josh Griffin, not to mention Paul Vaughan and Jon Bennison.
“I’m delighted he’s signed,” Applegarth added. “He’s a real unsung hero of the team. He does a lot of the tough stuff and unselfish acts that all his teammates appreciate and probably doesn’t get as many headlines as some of the other stuff that we’ve been seeing. He’s an absolute champion bloke and character in the dressing room and, more importantly, a really good player. I’m delighted he’s agreed to stay.”
