The Rambo franchise is set to return as Jalmari Helander prepares to explore the origins of Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo in a new prequel film. In a recent interview, the director revealed that the upcoming installment will take a different and lighter approach than the previous two films.

The Sisu director has recently opened up about his vision for the upcoming Rambo prequel, revealing that the film will take a more “adventurous” approach.
In a recent interview with Dexerto, Jalmari Helander discussed his plans for the project, which will explore John Rambo’s early years during the Vietnam War. Talking about the shift in tone, he said, “It won’t be as dark as the last two Rambos,” referencing Rambo (2008) and Rambo: Last Blood (2019).
Both of the previous movies focused on Sylvester Stallone’s character, John Rambo’s brutal missions in Burma and Mexico, respectively. Helander added, “It’s going to be a little more adventurous, and I hope to inspire a new generation of 10-year-olds to go into the forest to play Rambo. Let’s see how that goes.”
The new film will serve as a prequel, focusing on the events that shaped the character before the story of Rambo: First Blood (1982). The new film will explore John Rambo’s early years. Moreover, it will delve into his experiences during the Vietnam War and the events that “shaped one of cinema’s most memorable action heroes.”
In October, Jalmari Helander confirmed to the outlet that he was preparing for production, noting that he will travel to Bangkok for “hard prep.” The filming will reportedly begin in January 2026. Meanwhile, as per the publication, the prequel will reportedly star Noah Centineo as a young John Rambo, with final negotiations currently underway.
While there is no confirmed release date for the prequel yet, Helander’s recent comments have sparked excitement amongst fans.
