Camera Club member John Scamell managed to catch a peregrine falcon on camera near Beaulieu as it zipped past above his head.

Based on top speed, peregrine falcons are the fastest member of the animal kingdom, and the bird almost looked like it was giving John some side eye while flying past.

The falcons can reach top speeds of more than 200 miles per hour when diving, though it seems to be holding a steady height in John’s photo.

The lightning fast bird is the UK’s biggest falcon, and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust says the bird can be easily identified through its white throat and cheeks.

The species also has a very distinct black mask and moustache, with a dark slate-grey colour on its body and a white underbelly.

Peregrine falcons typically nest on rocky areas or sea cliffs, though they have also used tall buildings as an alternative home.

While the falcon pictured by John was not diving, it is not unusual for peregrines to swoop in to eat ducks, rabbits or bats.
