Across Sussex, 286 community pharmacies are offering treatment for conditions like sore throats, earaches and sinusitis, helping to ease pressure on GP services.
Brijesh Thaker, pharmacist at Coldean Pharmacy, said: “Pharmacy First has really changed the way people can access healthcare.
“We can now assess symptoms, provide treatment and medication straight away, and only refer to a GP if it is really needed.”
Since January 2024, patients have been able to access care for seven common conditions directly at their pharmacy without seeing a GP, as part of the Pharmacy First scheme.
In July alone, 8,599 patients in Sussex used the service.
Pharmacies can also offer repeat supplies of the contraceptive pill, emergency contraception and support for those newly prescribed antidepressants.
Bruce Wallace, pharmacist at Ashington Pharmacy, said: “As we head into winter, your local pharmacy is also the best place to get your flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccinations.
“We offer advice on which vaccines you are eligible for, how they can protect you, and what to expect.”
Pharmacists can refer patients to other healthcare professionals if necessary and update GP records as part of the service.
