Billy Butler has been flooded with messages of support as he confirmed his Sunday show will no longer be broadcast. The radio legend has previously hosted three hour slots on both Saturday and Sunday.

However, a post on Facebook shared by his wife Lesley Butler, announced the show will only air on Saturdays going forward. The post was captioned: “Sadly Billy’s three Sunday shows have been retired but you can still listen to Billy Butler every Saturday on Liverpool Live 10am to 1pm. With great guests music and chat. Thanks everyone for your kind words and support.”

In the short clip, Billy jokingly referenced his former Sunday slot, as he said: “On Sunday mornings, three Billy Butler shows on Liverpool Live. Oh, I forgot. I haven’t got any anymore.”

People took to the comments to shares messages of support to the 83-year-old radio legend after the update. Jo Clare said: “Not very happy about this.”

Ryan O’Neil commented: “Oh Billy keep going mate.” Debs Lundon Lucas posted: “This is so sad. I’ve been listening to Billy for years. Will miss our Sunday morning shows.”

Billy responded to Debs post as he said: “Thank you Debs”. The broadcasting legend is regarded as one of the voices of Liverpool and started his legendary career in guest slots on Radio Merseyside in 1971.

He moved across to Radio City in 1979, around the same time he became the co-host of a Saturday morning children’s TV show, The Mersey Pirate.

He returned to Radio Merseyside in 1983, and remained there until 2018, when the station decided not to renew his contract.

Fans don’t need to wait too long for Billy to return to the airwaves as he will appear as a special guest on the show hosted by his son, Lee Butler, on Friday, when he will play clips form his famous game, Hold Your Plums.

Announcing his appearance, Lee said on Facebook: “Hold ya plums! Look who popped into the In Demand Radio studio this morning for a DOUBLE Brekky Butler and drop my prezzy off for my bday tomorrow! My dad Billy Butler

“And guess what! Big bad Billy Butler is joining us on the show next Friday to chat about Hold ya Plums and we’re gonna play you a few clips!

Lee celebrated his birthday over the weekend and Billy took to Facebook to wish him well on his special day. He said: “Happy birthday to my son Lee.

“Don’t ever change and stay the loving and giving person you always are. Dad.”

Weekends with Billy Butler will return to the airwaves on Saturday from 10am – 1pm.

On the Liverpool Live website, the Sunday slot previously occupied by Billy has just been temporarily replaced with a Liverpool Live branded placeholder.
