The council’s cabinet is set to consider the future of the Solent Meads site in Southbourne, currently operated by Golf for All Limited, which has held the lease since 2003.

The golf course itself first opened in 1961 but its lease will end by November 2026.

Under the new proposals, the site could be designated as a nature park.

BCP Council leader Millie Earl said: “I’m excited about the future of the Solent Meads site and the opportunity it holds for the local community.”

“With the lease about to expire on the golf course we have a chance to legally protect it from future development and open it up to the public as a nature park.

“One of our key commitments as an administration is to improve access to green space for residents and to support nature to recover.”

“By designating the site as a nature park and encouraging nature to thrive there, we will protect it for residents now, and long into the future, to enjoy. ”

As reported by the Echo, a petition titled “Stop BCP From Closing Solent Meads Golf Course” raised concerns about the site’s future.

It has gathered thousands of signatures calling for the course to remain open either under Golf for All Limited or a new golf operator.

Councillor Earl added: “We intend to consult on the future use of the space in the spring, with golf continuing until November next year.”
