Rohl has spoken to potential candidates for the position to work alongside Sascha Lense, the performance manager, and assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach. The German duo joined Rohl when he was named as Russell Martin‘s successor last month and the likes of Neil McCann, Steven Davis and Steven Smith are under consideration to give the head coach an extra pair of hands on the training ground.

Now the Rangers Review understands Rohl could also hire a coach to work on set-pieces as he looks to finalise his backroom team in the coming weeks.

The task of working on dead ball situations – in both an attacking and defensive sense – was the remit of coach Mike Williamson during Martin’s short tenure as boss. Williamson and Matt Gill departed the club alongside Martin, but goalkeeper coach Sal Bibbo was retained as he was reunited with his former Sheffield Wednesday manager upon Rohl’s appointment on a long-term deal. Performance coach Rhys Owen also remains at Ibrox.

Rangers have encountered a number of issues from free-kick and corner situations over recent seasons and the potential arrival of a set-piece specialist is designed to find the marginal gains that could be crucial in the second half of the season. It is believed Rohl is giving serious thought to candidates over the international break while he, Lense and Kaltenbach take stock following a hectic start to life at Ibrox.

Rangers earned a 3-0 victory over Dundee on Sunday to record a third successive Premiership win under Rohl’s guidance. Celtic remain five points ahead of Rangers but Hearts – who have played a game more – are now just 12 points in front after recent stumbles at the top of the table.

Rohl’s side return to Premiership action against Livingston next weekend. The Europa League visit of Braga comes days later, before Falkirk make the trip to Ibrox as Rangers look to continue their encouraging start under their new head coach.

“At first I’m very happy that we’ve now won three games in a row,” Rohl said after the win at Dens Park. “I think when I arrived we had [nine] points. Now we have nine points in three games.

“I think this is huge, as is keeping clean sheets. That’s helpful. To win 3-0 is good but we know our expectations are high. I’m here to build up something but not just wins.

“We want to do more but it takes steps and I think it’s important to understand that after wins, we are not straight up in one direction and after we lose it’s in another direction. We need to a good balance and I want to see a step forward. At the moment I see forward steps, even if everything is not perfect.”
