The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a recall for a Google phone. The Google Pixel 4a Smartphone presents a risk of fire as the batteries may overheat during normal use. The recall was published by the OPPS today, November 14.
Google initiated a remote firmware update in January 2025 for the device. Affected products were manufactured between 2020 and May 2021 and sold between August 2020 and September 2022, but other distributors may have sold products beyond this date.
According to the OPSS, the product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Consumers with impacted devices received email and on-device notifications of the firmware update, which was rolled out remotely and automatically to impacted devices.
The update reduced the risk of the battery overheating by reducing its battery capacity and charging speed, the corrective action has been ongoing since January 2025. Consumers with impacted products may be eligible for a free repair, cash payment or Google Store hardware discount credit, depending on location.

You do not need to contact Google if you already have received an appeasement from the company or Google has already confirmed you do not have an impacted product.
On Google Support’s guidance, it states: “Pixel phones like other smartphones on the market, use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries—and these batteries are consumable components that may experience performance, capacity, or runtime degradation as they are used. That’s why we recommend that you consider replacing your battery if you notice a decrease in your battery’s capacity or runtime.”
