Championship

Championship side Oldham have confirmed the signing of overseas hooker Cole Geyer ahead of the 2026 season.

Geyer, who is the son of NRL Grand Final winner and Melbourne Storm great Matt Geyer, has penned a one-year deal with the Roughyeds.

He follows his former Burleigh Bears teammate Ewan Moore to Boundary Park, with the pair being part of the Bears’ Queensland Cup winning side last season.

The hooker has spent the entirety of his senior career in the Queensland Cup, starting with Brisbane Tigers before joining the Bears ahead of the 2024, with 57 appearances under his belt in the second string competition.

And, he makes the move to the Championship eager to test himself in the Northern Hemisphere.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Geyer told Roughyeds TV.

“Something I have wanted to do for a while now is head over to the UK and play some footy – I’m really grateful Oldham has given me the opportunity and really excited to get amongst it.”

On Moore, who joined Oldham earlier this week, Geyer added: “Ewan is a good mate, we played together at Burleigh Bears this year and won the Grand Final. In ’24 we weren’t at our best but had a really good pre-season and set our expectations really high and went after the Grand Final. We were hungrier than other teams and it was a great team to be a part of – some of my best mates and best memories. I’m looking forward now to getting over to Oldham and hopefully doing the same thing there.”

Director of rugby Mike Ford said on Oldham’s latest recruit: “He is a dynamic hooker who has got skill, pace, vision and toughness. These are things that excite me and like Ewan he is hungry and has seen an opportunity in England and wants to grab it.”

Ex-Hull KR man commits to Championship club

Oldham have also confirmed that former Hull KR and Salford Red Devils man Ryan Lannon has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

Lannon, who turns 30 in January, joined the club from Widnes Vikings earlier this year before going on to make 11 appearances and score three tries for the club.

On Lannon’s deal, Ford said: “He started with us really well and is very hard to tackle. He is tough to put down and can grow even more with his fitness and defensive work

“He has been there with Super League and we think he can get back to that level now he is settled here. We want to see him have a big pre-season and kick on – we are really happy that he has re-signed for us because he has the potential to win collisions especially on attack.”
