Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has given a rare interview in France, where he singled out praise for Brazilian football legend Ronaldo. The 24-year-old spoke ahead of Marseille’s Ligue 1 match against Nice on Friday night.

Since his move from United in the summer of 2024, Greenwood has been making a big impression with the French club. The deal saw United pocket £26.7million, and also included a sell-on clause that entitles them to half of any future fee Marseille might receive for him.

With the January and summer transfer windows looming, clubs interested in the forward will be impressed by his performances, especially after his stellar showing against Nice. Greenwood netted twice in a resounding 5-1 away victory to move Marseille above PSG and to the top of Ligue 1.

The two goals bring his tally for the season to 10, putting him in pole position for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot, ahead of Strasbourg’s Joaquin Panichelli.

During a chat with Ligue 1 Plus before the match against Nice, Greenwood was quizzed about his skills. When asked about his best move on the pitch, he responded: “The stepover.”

When the interviewer brought up Brazilian superstar Ronaldo, Greenwood said: “I watched a lot of him when I was younger, he used to do it on the goalkeepers a lot, which is kind of crazy.”

In another part of the interview, Greenwood shared a technique he uses to stay calm when faced with scoring opportunities.

“The night before a game, I’m in bed and you’re just visualising things in your head, moments on the pitch,” he said.

“And when I go out to warm up on the pitch, I like to visualise, maybe if I’m in certain situations I’ll do this or do that, so when it comes to it it’s second nature really, I can just do it straight away.”

He also discussed the benefit of being two-footed when finding himself in a threatening position against defenders.

He said: “When you’ve got both feet, the defender sometimes likes to show you one way on to your weaker side or on to another side, which I like, because if he’s showing me or wants to push me, I’ll take the opportunity because I can shoot on the right side.

“Or if he wants to show me to the left, I can take the opportunity on the left.”
