Police searching for a missing man in Warrington today confirmed they have found a body. Geoffrey Whitfield was reported missing from home on Thursday, November 20. Searches for the 86-year-old have been ongoing and officers have now confirmed they found a body in the River Mersey at around 12pm today (November 22).
Cheshire Police say formal identification has not been confirmed but it is believed to be that of Geoffrey. His family have been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
Police have requested that the family’s privacy to be respected at this time.
Inspector Nick Bamber said: “Sadly, this is not the outcome that we were hoping for and out thoughts are with Geoffrey’s family at this difficult time.
“I would also like to thank everyone who has assisted with the search for Geoffrey, including local residents, the Northwest Underwater Search Team, Warrington Council and all the volunteers from Cheshire Search and Rescue (CSAR).”
