Fabrizio Romano has provided a crucial update on Arne Slot’s position as Liverpool head coach following the club’s disastrous 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
The reigning Premier League champions have endured a nightmare defence of their title, currently languishing in 11th place after 12 matches.
The mood at Anfield turned toxic on Saturday as Sean Dyche’s Forest side dismantled the Reds, marking Liverpool’s sixth league defeat of the campaign.
With speculation mounting over a potential sacking, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has clarified the stance of FSG regarding Slot’s immediate future.
Despite the growing unrest among the fanbase, Romano revealed that Liverpool’s owners are not planning to pull the trigger “imminently.”
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that while the situation is viewed as “dangerous,” no replacement is currently being lined up. He said:
“This season has been really poor for Liverpool so far. Terrible start. Terrible first three months for Liverpool. 11 is the position in the Premier League table. Already lost six.
“So Liverpool are really poor in this moment in the Premier League. Really, really, really bad game against Nottingham Forest.
“Let me start telling what happens with Arne Slot? Guys, at the moment I don’t have any sort of information on Liverpool owners deciding to take a decision imminently. So I mean now, today, tomorrow. So Liverpool are not thinking about changing the manager now.
“Obviously they (owners) want to see a different kind of results, different kind of performances. They expect much more by Arne Slot and by this team.
“So for sure Liverpool want to see something different from the manager and from the players because this is not only Arne Slot. The players also have to take responsibility as Van Dijk said.
However, Romano warned that this patience is not infinite. He continued: “Slot knows that the situation is dangerous. It’s complicated now but at the same time Arne Slot can feel the backing and the support from the club.
“So Liverpool are not in talks with any other manager considering the possibility to fire the coach. That’s the situation as of today.
“Of course results have to change immediately. So already in the Champions League, in the Premier League, especially in the Premier League because in Premier League, Liverpool are in a really complicated situation. So that’s the feeling as of today.”
The statistics behind Liverpool’s 2025/26 campaign make for grim reading. After storming to the title in his debut season, Slot’s second year has unraveled at frightening speed.
The Reds have now lost six of their opening 12 Premier League games, a run of form that leaves them statistically enduring one of the worst title defences in Premier League history.
The 3-0 drubbing by Nottingham Forest was a new nadir, with goals from Murillo, Nicolò Savona, and Morgan Gibbs-White condemning Liverpool to their heaviest home defeat of the season.
The result leaves them on just 18 points, closer to the relegation zone than they are to league leaders Arsenal.
To put this decline into context, Liverpool only lost four league games during the entire 2024/25 title-winning campaign. They have already exceeded that total before December.
While FSG are not holding emergency talks today, reports suggest that the upcoming festive period will be decisive.
With the busy December schedule approaching, Slot effectively has one month to save his job.
The daunting run of fixtures leading into the New Year serves as an unofficial deadline for the Dutchman to arrest the slide.
If Liverpool enter 2026 stranded in the bottom half of the table, the “backing and support” Romano describes could evaporate overnight.
For now, Slot remains in the dugout, but the clock is ticking louder than ever at Anfield.
