Anna Kournikova was just 14 years old when she burst onto the scene and made her WTA Tour debut in 1995. The Russian star quickly became one of the most well-known tennis players. She peaked at No. 8 in the singles rankings and No. 1 in doubles – but was forced to retire from professional tennis aged just 21 due to injuries.
Kournikova also hit headlines off the court, as the two-time Australian Open doubles champion started dating Enrique Iglesias in 2001. Now, they live a private life in Miami with their three children – and are expecting their fourth child.
The Russian tennis star and Spanish singer maintain a low profile and have never even confirmed whether they are married, although Kournikova has worn a diamond ring for years and uses a double-barrelled surname.
As they prepare to become a family of six, a source close to the people told People: “They are so excited, and also spending time getting their other three kids.
“They’re ready for change and controlled chaos. Anna and Enrique are happiest when they are home with their family.”
Kournikova gave fans a rare glimpse into her family life last month, sharing a photo of herself and her three kids dressed up for Halloween. The 44-year-old welcomed two twins, Lucy and Nicholas, with Iglesias in 2017. Their third child, Mary, was born in 2020.
In her first Instagram post in more than a year, Kournikova donned a yellow duck costume while her daughters dressed up as pumpkins, and her son wore a Real Madrid shirt. Fellow retired tennis star Kim Clijsters commented: “Adorable.”
The former doubles No. 1 met Iglesias on the set of his music video for ‘Escape’ shortly before they started dating. By the time Kournikova played her final match in 2003, they were already together.
The 44-year-old never officially announced her retirement, but did not play an official match after losing in the first round of an ITF tournament in Charlottesville in 2003. Kournikova played occasional exhibition events in the years after her last official tournament, even pairing up with her old doubles partner, Martina Hingis, at the Wimbledon legends event in 2010.
