St Helens have released a statement to confirm the immediate release and exit of one of their hookers who will pursue a new career.

Young playmaker Ciaran Nolan will walk away from rugby league to pursue a career in engineering with St Helens confirming the 20-year-old’s decision to call time on his playing career.

Nolan was promoted to the Saints first team squad ahead of the 2025 season, however, injury limited game time and led to him featuring for the reserves in the summer as he regained fitness.

That led to him landing a loan move to Salford Red Devils with Nolan debuting in Super League against Hull FC in August, with that game being his sole appearance in the top flight. He had previously played three senior games with Swinton Lions in the Championship in 2024.

A statement from St Helens confirmed Nolan’s decision, announcing: “Ciaran Nolan has confirmed he is to step down from playing Rugby League to pursue a new career.”

St Helens youngster steps away from rugby league

St Helens had confirmed their 2026 squad numbers last week and it was notable that Nolan, who had been in and around the first-team environment in 2025, had not been handed a shirt number.

That’s now been explained with the 20-year-old walking away to take up his role in the engineering field, ending a six-year association with the club.

He first joined Saints at the age of 14 as a scholarship player and progressed through the system to eventually feature for the academy and reserves, starting at hooker in the club’s Grand Final win over Wigan in 2025.

Speaking on his decision, Nolan said: “I’m very grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent this Club over the last six years.

“I would like to thank all the staff who have supported me during my journey throughout the system and into the First Team, as well as every team-mate that I’ve taken to the field with.

“I’ve made some incredible memories and bonds during my time here, and have worn the jersey with both pride and privilege. Thank you for everything.”
