Burnham-On-Sea’s Avenue Tennis Club saw its spirited Over 75s team narrowly miss out on victory in a County showdown against Hereford and Worcester last month due to a technical rule.
The tightly contested match was held in Malvern and featured five determined Avenue Club players — Axel Ruttler, Ian Howard, David Holiday, Barry Ramsden, and captain John Barrington — representing Somerset.
After nearly four hours of intense rallies, lengthy deuces and nail-biting tie breaks, the teams finished level on rubbers at two apiece.
However, under the County League’s match rules, victory was awarded to the home side for having claimed the first two rubbers.
“It was a tough result for the team who gave it their all,” said Club spokesperson. “They showed exceptional skill and endurance throughout.”
The team will regroup for their next fixture on Tuesday, 29th July, travelling to Downton near Salisbury to face Dorset, with further matches against Devon and Avon scheduled later this season.
