Hull KR will be hoping to become the second consecutive Super League side to be crowned as Sports Personality’s Team of the Year, though a rule change may have dented their chances.

Wigan Warriors took the prized accolade in 2024 as they were crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s Team of the Year, becoming just the third rugby league team to claim the award.

The Warriors had also won it in 1994 whilst St Helens’ treble-winning season of 2006 saw them claim the award, and now another treble-winning team will be hoping to add their name to that prestigious list with the shortlist set to be confirmed in December.

Hull KR knocked Wigan off their perch in each of the domestic competitions in 2025, winning the Challenge Cup in dramatic fashion late on, holding their nerve to win the League Leaders Shield, and then beating Matt Peet’s side at Old Trafford to complete the treble and win a first-ever Super League crown.

Making their achievements even more incredible was the fact that they ended a 40-year trophy drought, having last lifted silverware in 1985.

Sports Personality of the Year chances for Hull KR in the hands of the public

Such an impressive season would ordinarily make them very strong contenders to be crowned Sports Personality’s Team of the Year, however, the competition is stiff in 2025.

England won both the football European Championships and Rugby Union World Cup in an incredible summer of sport for women’s sport with stars such as Alessio Russo and Ellie Kildunne likely to be challenging for individual awards as well.

Later in the summer, team Europe won golf’s Ryder Cup as they won in America in impressive fashion meaning they’re also contenders. There’s even competition from within rugby league with Wigan Warriors’ women winning all three trophies and the mid-season nines competition, whilst Halifax Panthers dominated the wheelchair game as well.

The shortlist for the award will be confirmed in December but the date for the Sports Personality of the Year awards has been confirmed as Thursday, 18th December.

There has also been an update in how the Team of the Year is decided with the BBC confirming that the public are allowed to vote for that award for the first time ever.

Whilst that will likely gain Hull KR well over 10,000 votes in East Hull, you can bet that plenty more in West Hull may well be voting for other nominees.

Of course, we still have to see if Hull KR are nominated first but such an impressive and historic season will likely be given the nod of a nomination, though if that’s the case then it would come down to the public as to whether Willie Peters’ side actually claim the crown.
