Police have said “enough is enough” after making dozens of arrests in Nottingham city centre.
The police crackdown follows an incident at Old Market Square’s Winter Wonderland on Sunday November 16, where several individuals brandished machetes in full view of families enjoying the festivities. Seven suspects, the youngest just 14 years old, have so far been arrested on suspicion of various offences and the investigation continues.
Nottinghamshire Police increased patrols as a result, leading to 41 arrests within seven days.
Individuals were arrested for an array of offences, including carrying a bladed article, possession of drugs, possession with intent to supply, two arrests for attempted robbery and two arrests for being drunk and disorderly.
Assistant Chief Constable Suk Verma said: “Last week, I was clear that we will not tolerate people coming into the city to commit crime.
“Enough is enough. We cannot let the minority make the majority feel unsafe and so we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to criminality.
“We have always had visibility on the Old Market Square but hope the additional high-visibility patrols deployed in the area and the surrounding streets will offer the public the reassurance they deserve.
“In the last seven days, we have made 41 arrests in this area, which sends out a very clear message to those who wish to come into Nottingham to commit crime.
“A number of these incidents saw the suspects caught very quickly thanks to the patrols we have in place.
“We want the city to be a no-go area for anyone who wishes to commit crime by making the environment as hostile as possible for them.
“And if that is not enough of a deterrent, and you still wish to commit crime, then rest assured, we will use all the powers at our disposal to put you before the courts and ensure you cannot come into Nottingham city centre again.”
