Cricket fan and cabinet member for transport and the environment, Councillor Majid Mahmood, accidentally struck a ball into a watching group of dignitaries at the launch of a four-lane cricket nets facility at Sparkhill Park

A distraught Birmingham city councillor ‘knocked out’ a bystander during the official opening of new cricket facilities at a Birmingham park today.

Cricket fan and cabinet member for transport and the environment, Councillor Majid Mahmood, accidentally struck a ball into a watching group of dignitaries at the launch of a four-lane cricket nets facility at Sparkhill Park.

The ball travelled beyond the nets into a crowd of bystanders, striking one woman on the back of the head. She went down and required urgent first aid as a result. Eyewitnesses said she was briefly unconscious as a result of the blow.

The new facilities were funded by a grant of nearly £200,000 for Birmingham City Council to be spent on two sites – Sparkhill Park and Small Heath Park.

The work at Sparkhill Park involved the installation of a four-lane cricket practice facility, featuring ball stop nets and non-turf pitches within the park.

Brumwish 2025 – buy a gift for a child in need

BrumWish 2025 is Birmingham Live’s festive drive to get thousands of gifts to children and young people across our city – among them the homeless, the vulnerable, kids in care, kids who are poorly or struggling, and kids who have little. We have teamed up again with partner charities and organisations who are leading the way.

There are THREE simple ways to help.

Buy a new gift from the Brumwish 2025 wishlist, hosted by Amazon. In just a click your donation will be whizzing its way to volunteers at Edgbaston Stadium.Donate money to the appeal fund hosted by Thrive Together Birmingham – this will help pay for gifts for kids with specialist needs or specific wishes.Buy a gift and, even better, rope in friends, neighbours and workmates to do the same, then drop off your pressies at Edgbaston Stadium, Edgbaston Road, B5 7QU . Volunteers will be there to help you. Please don’t wrap your gifts. You can also drop off by arrangement until Monday 16th December – contact Louise on 07469 979286.

Thanks to our partnership with Toys 4 Birmingham, every single gift will find a good home in the loving care of a child living in B&Bs or hotels, hostels or refuges, children receiving support from specialist organisations and charities, and families being supported by children’s centres and charities around the city.

Making up the Brumwish and Toys4Birmingham gang are faith-based Thrive Together Birmingham, Birmingham Playcare Network, Warwickshire Cricket Foundation (the charitable arm of Warwickshire County Cricket Club), Birmingham Forward Steps and BirminghamLive/Birmingham Mail.

Thank you to Amazon UK for their support.

The group of onlookers included fellow city councillors and local representatives of charities and businesses.

One eyewitness, Jagdeep Singh, said he believed better health and safety measures ought to have been in place and it was a ‘reckless’ act. Another said: “There did not appear to be any safety protocols in place, which was really bad.”

Councillor Mahmood said of the incident: “I am sincerely sorry for this accident and I am grateful to everyone there today who helped to make sure she was okay, particularly the first aiders from the leisure centre. I want to reiterate my apologies once again and I will be reaching out directly to her to personally apologise.”

We understand first aid was administered at the scene and the injured woman was later checked over by medics at hospital as a precaution but did not require an ambulance.
