Anthony Gordon could not hide his disappointment following Nick Pope’s error in Newcastle United’s Champions League defeat to Marseille.
The Magpies had taken the lead through Harvey Barnes, but a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace in the second half turned the game on its head.
Marseille beat Newcastle United 2-1 on Tuesday night, with Eddie Howe’s side giving up their one goal advantage within a minute of the second half restarting.
Who was the most DISAPPOINTING Newcastle player vs Marseille? Anthony Gordon reacts to Nick Pope error as Newcastle United lose to Marseille
A moment of madness from Nick Pope allowed Marseille to equalise.
He rushed off his line to try and intercept a through ball for Aubameyang, only for the former Arsenal striker to get there first and skip beyond the Newcastle United goalkeeper.
What came next was an extraordinary finish, as the 36-year-old made it 1-1. He was at it again four minutes later, as his second goal proved to be the decisive strike.
What was Nick Pope thinking?
Moments after Aubameyang’s equaliser, Anthony Gordon could be seen with his head in his hands.
That is exactly what pretty much every Newcastle United fan will have been doing at that exact moment, with Pope’s bewildering decision to rush from his box costing his side.
Pope proved he can be a great sweeper keeper against Manchester City, helping deny Erling Haaland in the first half. However, he got this one completely wrong and his mistake proved to be fatal.

This is the third away game in a row that Pope has made a costly error for Newcastle United.
After performing very well against Manchester City, the 33-year-old’s place in the starting XI is once again under severe pressure.
Who should be Newcastle’s number one?
Aaron Ramsdale was on the bench for the Magpies yet again, with his only Toon starts coming in the Carabao Cup.
There will once again be a clamour for the summer signing to be given a chance, but do not be surprised if Eddie Howe sticks with Pope when Newcastle United face Everton on Saturday.
