I’m opposite the metro station where the two National Guard troops were shot.
There’s police tape holding us on the sidewalk as a large number of news crews gather. Glass from a bus stop is shattered onto the pavement.
The intersection is full of police cars, armed security personnel and national guard troops. This is just a block and a half from the White House.
I’ve spoken to several eyewitnesses. One said he heard two gunshots, followed by a further three. People began to run in panic, some trying to take shelter in a liquor store.
Another eyewitness who was in his car close to the metro station also heard the gunshots ring out. He got out and filmed the aftermath.
I’ve seen his footage which shows two National Guardsman down on the sidewalk in their uniforms, being treated by medics.
A third person, apparently civilian, was also on the sidewalk being treated. The witness said he didn’t know whether that was the gunman or a bystander.
