A number of councils in London have been targeted in a cyberattack as an investigation into the security breach is launched.

The cyberattacks occurred over the past 48 hours.

Westminster Council has shut down its networks due to a “cybersecurity incident,” while Hackney Council has escalated its internal cyber threat level to “critical.”

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council states that its “serious IT issues” are still ongoing, affecting communication with residents, and an investigation has been launched to determine the source of the cyberattack.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is also among the councils to be targeted, with the attack reportedly originating in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Cybersecurity researcher Kevin Beaumont says ransomware is reportedly behind the cyber incident impacting multiple London, UK councils.

The NCSC has confirmed it is “aware of an incident affecting some local authority services in London”.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council has identified the cause of the cyber incident on November 24.
