A VISITING cricketer has been jailed for three years after the Royal Court heard how he had followed a woman on her way home before violently attacking her and stealing her phone.

Kipling Doriga (30) had been in Jersey to compete for Papua New Guinea in the International Cricket Council Challenge League, a global tournament which forms part of the qualification process for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

The court heard that after drinking at the hotel where his team were staying, Doriga had walked into the centre of St Helier at about 1.30am and noticed that venue were closing. Shortly afterwards he saw the woman put a mobile her phone in her handbag as she left the Royal Yacht and decided to follow her in a bid to steal the phone.

The woman screamed when she was confronted by Doriga in Hilary Street, at which point he slapped her twice, knocking her to the ground.

Doriga, who has featured at two T20 World Cups, pleaded guilty to one charge of robbery, expressing to the court how remorseful he was for what he had done.

The Bailiff, Robert MacRae, said the court had a duty to ensure the streets of St Helier were safe, imposing a three-year sentence and ordering that Doriga be deported once he is released from prison.
