Zootropolis 2 has achieved a hugely impressive feat this week, following its sensational debut. The animated sequel landed the fourth-biggest global box-office opening ever – easily surpassing its 2016 predecessor.

According to Variety, Zootropolis 2 (titled Zootopia 2 in America) hopped to the top of the US box-office, earning $156 million from 4,000 venues since Wednesday 26 November.

Elsewhere in the world, the movie raked in a staggering $400 million, adding up to $556 million globally.

That figure means Zootropolis 2 has overtaken 2017’s The Fate of the Furious ($541.9 million) as the fourth biggest global box-office opening to date. The animation now sits below 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600.5 million), 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5 million) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($1.2 billion).

Disney is known for dominating the Thanksgiving weekend in the US, and Zootropolis 2 is no exception. As the second-best Thanksgiving launch of all time, it’s sandwiched between Disney sequels Moana 2, which earned $225 million over the festive five days in 2024, and Frozen II, which made $125 million during the same timeframe in 2019.

“The incredible response to Zootopia 2 reflects both its worldwide appeal and the remarkable work of our filmmakers and cast,” said Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman.

“It’s a proud moment for Disney Animation and all of us at Disney, not to mention a great way to start the holiday season.”

Zootropolis 2 sees (well, hears) Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman reprising their roles as optimistic rabbit Judy Hopps and sly fox Nick Wilde. This time, the charmingly different ZPD officers try to solve another mystery while also fighting to clear their names.

The duo are joined by a range of returning stars including Goodwin’s real-life husband Josh Dallas. Meanwhile, the sequel will also feature some cameos from Josh Gad, AuliÊ»i Cravalho, Rachel House and Dwayne Johnson.

Though Zootropolis 2 has beat its predecessor when it comes to box-office debuts, the sequel has a lot to live up to as the original movie, which opened with $75 million, went on to generate $1.02 billion worldwide.

Zootropolis 2/Zootopia 2 is out in cinemas now.
