British Steel has been awarded a major contract for Turkey’s high-speed rail network, as announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The contract will see British Steel supply 35 million GBP worth of rail products for the project connecting Mersin with Adana, Osmaniye & Gaziantep, and is in addition to a similarly-sized agreement the company announced last year.

Forming part of over 400 million GBP worth of export deals; the contract was announced ahead of the G20 summit in Johannesberg, where the Prime Minister met with a number of Indo-Pacific and African leaders to advocate for the UK’s access to growing international markets.

British Steel’s Chief Commercial Officer Lisa Coulson said:

We are proud to have already delivered £30m of our rail products into high-speed projects to help decarbonise travel in Türkiye and are delighted to be building upon this with a new supply agreement.

Securing these prestigious contracts – with the support of UK Export Finance – was a major achievement and underlines British Steel’s ability to build the sustainable track systems of the future.

We’re extremely grateful for the UK government’s support and are confident our partnership with the operators of Türkiye’s rail infrastructure will shortly secure additional orders and create new jobs in Scunthorpe.

Whilst in Johannesburg; the Prime Minister also visited a train depot to announce a new agreement between the UK and South Africa to provide aid in the reformation of South Africa’s rail system.

Crossrail International will provide both strategic advice and consultancy services in order to drive private investment into South African railways and aim to maximise social, economic and environmental benefits, as well as support opportunities for British companies across the country’s rail sector.

Additionally, the UK and Vietnam have announced a new partnership to drive digital transformation across Vietnam’s rail sector. The collaboration will see the UK support Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction in the delivery of new, high-tech, sustainable rail networks.
