Police were called to Nottingham city centre as a large group of youths reportedly faced off near Winter Wonderland.

Eyewitnesses told Nottinghamshire Live that officers had been called to South Parade near Old Market Square at around 6pm on Monday, December 1.

Onlookers said they had seen different groups of teenagers, who had lanyards on them that resembled those handed to college or school attendees, confront each other.

These youths then spat at the police and recorded the chaos that unfolded in the rainy city street, according to witnesses. People near the tram stop were also heard screaming.

It is not known if anyone was seriously injured during the incident but there was no police cordon in the surrounding area when Nottinghamshire Live arrived.

A picture posted online showed a dozen officers interspersed in a peaceful crowd on South Parade, but this seemed to be taken after the incident had dispersed.

Later that evening two police cars, including a dog unit, were stationed on the street and police were patrolling the Winter Wonderland – although the latter is fairly normal.

Nottinghamshire Police has been contacted for confirmation on the nature of the incident.

Trams were briefly prevented from running due to the trouble around the Old Market Square stop, according to a post by operator NET at 6.11pm, but the network was fully operational by 6.51pm.
