Bruno Guimaraes is starting to step up when Newcastle need him most

In Friday’s press conference previewing Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Burnley, Eddie Howe was asked if Bruno Guimaraes was becoming the club’s talisman in front of goal.
Howe laughed before suggesting he would rather he wasn’t. After all, Guimaraes is Newcastle’s midfield enforcer and it should be the club’s forwards and wingers who are coming up with the goods and finding important goals.
But when the Magpies were under the cosh in the first half against Burnley, it was Guimaraes again who came up with the goal to tip the balance of the game in his side’s favour.
And he did so with an incredible goal direct from a corner kick, whipping an inswinging delivery from the left-hand side over the despairing reach of former United team-mate Martin Dubravka in the Burnley goal.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving members £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.
That was the Brazilian international’s fifth Premier League goal of the season and each one has come at important moments in games where his team have needed him most.
His first goal of the season was an equaliser against Liverpool, his second was to break the deadlock against Nottingham Forest to inspire a big win.
He scored the winner in the 90th minute against Fulham, opened the scoring in Tuesday’s draw with Spurs and then backed it up by doing it again on Saturday afternoon.
It is the mark of a good captain to take on the mantle and come up in big moments for your team. The best captains over the years have done it – Roy Keane at Manchester United and Steven Gerrard at Liverpool come to mind – and Guimaraes is starting to fit into that mould, too.
With two huge games away at Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Wednesday and the Wear-Tyne derby against fierce rivals Sunderland a week today, do not back against Guimaraes coming up with a decisive contribution again.
